New Citizen Casts First Ballot Romero
became a U.S. citizen this summer, and cast her first vote this
past week. “I was so excited,” said Romero her eyes tearing
with emotion. “This was my first time voting in any election.”
Romero took advantage of early voting, and cast her ballot
at the Golden Gate Library. “The act of voting was very easy,”
said Romero. “The hard part was making the decisions on who to
vote for.”
Romero was a teacher of children with disabilities in the
Dominican Republic prior to coming to the U.S. in 1999. “When I
was in Cuba, I made a little over $2 a month,” said Romero. “In
Cuba, it’s very hard to have anything for yourself. I wanted a
better life for me and my family.”
So Romero left Cuba in 1996 for the Dominican Republic,
where with the help of family, she eventually was able to get
passage to the United States.
Romero first landed in Miami. She didn’t speak English, but
learned quickly from friends, television and radio programs,
and customers at work.
“We came to the United States knowing we have to work hard,”
said Romero. “If you (United States) open the door for us, we
have to do our best.”
Romero said she’s looking forward to the challenges of her
new job, and perhaps becoming a hearing aid specialist one day.
“I have so much to learn, but I’m feeling really good
here.”
