Tax Credit Could Help with
Hearing Aid Costs

Contact your Senators and Representatives to support the hearing aid tax credit.

The U.S. Congress and Senate are considering giving consumers a tax break to help you finance the cost of hearing aids. If passed, it would give consumers up to $1,000 credit toward the purchase of two hearing aids. Individuals age 55 and over or those purchasing hearing aids for a dependent would be eligible. Consumers could take advantage of the tax break once every 5 years.

This legislation could help the millions of Americans who now need hearing aids, but go without them because they can't afford them. While more than 31 million Americans suffer from some type of hearing problem, only about 7 million people currently use hearing devices. Why? For most people, it's the cost.

The average cost for a hearing aid in 2004 was $1,800, including fitting, evaluation and post-fitting treatment, according to the Better Hearing Institute. Most individuals require two devices, increasing the average out of pocket expenses to $3,600. This is not covered by Medicare. In the vast majority of cases, the financial cost of hearing aids is borne by the purchaser.

While Gulf Hearing Aid Center's policy is to help customers with financing options when needed, generally third-party financing is rare. This legislation could help fill the financial gap. If you would like more information on this tax credit proposal, please click here.
